Where to Stay in Cardiff for Rugby, Concerts and Events
Urban Space has serviced apartments within easy walking distance of every major Cardiff event venue.
Park Lane is the closest property to the Principality Stadium, Cardiff Arms Park and the Utilita Arena, all reachable on foot in under 15 minutes. Quayside sits directly opposite the Wales Millennium Centre. Pontcanna Place and The Lane face Sophia Gardens on Cathedral Road.
Staying near the Principality Stadium
The Principality Stadium is the beating heart of Cardiff’s event calendar. With a capacity of 74,500, it hosts Wales rugby internationals, Six Nations fixtures, major concerts and the occasional boxing or motorsport spectacular. Finding accommodation that puts you within walking distance, without the post-match scramble for a taxi, makes a significant difference to the weekend.
Park Lane is the standout choice for stadium events. Situated on Park Place in Cardiff city centre, it is roughly a 10-minute walk to the stadium gates, passing through the civic quarter and along Westgate Street. The route is well lit, flat and well-policed on match days.
Rugby fixtures and Six Nations weekends
Wales home internationals at the Principality Stadium are some of the most sought-after event weekends in the UK calendar. Six Nations matches in particular see accommodation across Cardiff fill weeks, sometimes months, in advance. Park Lane’s studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments give groups the flexibility hotels cannot: a full kitchen to cook breakfast before the match, a living room to gather in before heading out, and space to decompress at the end of the night without paying for multiple rooms.
“Both are within touching distance of the Principality Stadium, independent restaurants, bars and some quality shopping”. – Urban Space Cardiff
The walk from Park Lane takes you past Gorsedd Gardens and down through the city centre, joining the flow of supporters heading towards the stadium. On the return, you are back at your apartment in minutes rather than queuing for transport.
Concerts: Andrea Bocelli, 8 May 2027
The Principality Stadium’s retractable roof makes it one of the few venues in the UK capable of hosting stadium concerts in any weather. Andrea Bocelli performs at the Principality Stadium on 8 May 2027, joining a long list of major acts who have chosen Cardiff for their headline dates.
For concert weekends, Park Lane works particularly well for groups arriving from outside Cardiff. You can check in, leave luggage, and head to the stadium without needing a car. Post-show, the walk back is straightforward even late at night.
Walking routes from Cathedral Road
Pontcanna Place and The Lane, both on Cathedral Road, are a pleasant 20-minute walk from the stadium. The route follows Cathedral Road down towards the city centre, crossing the River Taff via the footbridge near Cardiff Castle. It is a scenic, enjoyable walk on a match day, and many supporters choose to do it rather than use public transport.
- From Park Lane: Head south along Park Place, turn right onto Greyfriars Road, then left onto Westgate Street. The stadium is directly ahead. Approximately 10 minutes.
- From Pontcanna Place / The Lane: Walk south along Cathedral Road towards the city, cross the Taff at the footbridge near Cardiff Castle, and follow the crowds to Westgate Street. Approximately 20 minutes.
Cardiff Arms Park
Cardiff Arms Park sits immediately beside the Principality Stadium, making it equally accessible from Park Lane on foot. The ground is home to Cardiff Rugby Club and hosts club rugby throughout the season, as well as women’s internationals including Wales Women’s home fixtures.
Club rugby and women’s internationals
Cardiff Rugby Club fixtures run throughout the autumn and spring, often on weekday evenings as well as weekends. The Arms Park’s intimate atmosphere makes it a very different experience to the Principality Stadium, and it draws a loyal local crowd alongside travelling supporters.
Women’s internationals at the Arms Park have grown significantly in profile in recent years, with Wales Women fixtures regularly selling out. If you are travelling for a women’s international, the same logic applies as for the Principality Stadium: Park Lane is the closest Urban Space property, at roughly 10 minutes on foot.
- Club rugby season runs from September through to May
- Women’s internationals are typically scheduled in spring and autumn
- The Arms Park is immediately adjacent to the Principality Stadium, so the same walking routes apply from all Urban Space properties
Utilita Arena Cardiff
The Utilita Arena Cardiff on Mary Ann Street is the city’s largest indoor events venue, with a capacity of around 7,500. It hosts major touring artists, comedy nights, family shows and boxing events throughout the year. Because it is indoors and centrally located, it draws events across every season.
Indoor concerts and comedy nights
The Arena sits in the heart of the city centre, just off St Mary Street. From Park Lane, the walk takes around 12 minutes, heading south through the civic quarter and into the shopping district. It is a straightforward, well-signposted route that requires no transport.
For indoor events, the advantage of a serviced apartment over a hotel is particularly clear. You can pre-load your evening in your own space, with drinks and food from a fully equipped kitchen, before heading out. After the show, there are no late-night bar queues to navigate before getting to bed.
Key details for Utilita Arena events:
- Address: Mary Ann Street, Cardiff CF10 2EQ
- Walking time from Park Lane: approximately 12 minutes
- Walking time from Pontcanna Place / The Lane: approximately 25 minutes
- Walking time from Quayside: approximately 30 minutes
- No dedicated parking at the venue; NCP car parks available nearby
Wales Millennium Centre
The Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay is home to Welsh National Opera, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and a year-round programme of theatre, dance, comedy and live performance. For events at the WMC, there is one clear answer: Quayside.
Quayside: directly opposite the WMC
Quayside is located on Bute Crescent, Cardiff Bay, sitting directly opposite the Wales Millennium Centre on the Mermaid Quay waterfront. The walk from your apartment door to the Centre’s entrance is under two minutes. There is no other accommodation in Cardiff that puts you closer.
The apartments at Quayside are studio-style, sleeping two, with fully equipped kitchens, a washer/dryer and discounted parking available nearby. Mermaid Quay’s restaurants and bars are on your doorstep for pre-show dining, and you are back in your apartment within minutes of the curtain coming down.
Whether you are coming for a Welsh National Opera production, a touring West End show or a one-off comedy night, Quayside removes every logistical friction from the evening.
The Bay is well connected to the city centre by the Baycar bus service and the Cardiff Bay rail line from Cardiff Central, so staying at Quayside does not mean being cut off from the rest of the city during your visit.
Sophia Gardens and Bute Park / Blackweir
Sophia Gardens is home to the Glamorgan County Cricket Ground, one of the finest county cricket venues in England and Wales. The ground sits alongside the River Taff, with Bute Park and the Blackweir meadows forming a green corridor that stretches north from the city centre. In summer, the area also hosts outdoor concerts and festival events.
Cricket at Sophia Gardens
Glamorgan host county championship fixtures, One Day Cup matches and T20 Blast games throughout the summer season. International fixtures, including Test matches and white-ball internationals, have also been staged here. The ground has a relaxed, open feel, and a summer afternoon at Sophia Gardens is one of the more enjoyable ways to spend time in Cardiff.
Pontcanna Place and The Lane are directly opposite Sophia Gardens, on Cathedral Road. The walk to the ground entrance takes under two minutes. You can hear the crowd from your apartment.
Summer outdoor events at Bute Park and Blackweir
Bute Park and the adjacent Blackweir meadows host a growing number of outdoor concerts and festival events during the summer months. The parkland runs immediately behind Pontcanna Place and The Lane, making both properties the natural base for any event in this green space.
- Pontcanna Place (199 Cathedral Road): two-bedroom apartments sleeping four, opposite Sophia Gardens
- The Lane (Cathedral Road): one and two-bedroom apartments sleeping two or four, with balconies, also facing Sophia Gardens
Both properties are set back from the city centre enough to feel calm and residential, while remaining close enough to walk to the stadium, the city centre and the cricket ground with ease.
Booking for an event weekend
Event weekends in Cardiff move fast. Whether you are planning around a Six Nations fixture or a summer concert, here is what to know before you book.
Minimum stays and flexibility
Urban Space apartments are available for short breaks as well as longer stays. For high-demand event weekends, a two-night minimum stay typically applies. Booking early secures both availability and the best rate.
Early check-in and luggage storage
If you are travelling to Cardiff for a daytime event and arriving before the standard check-in time, contact the team in advance. Early check-in can often be arranged subject to availability, and luggage storage is available at Park Lane so you can drop bags and head straight to the venue.
Group bookings and exclusive use
Urban Space is well set up for groups. Park Lane can accommodate up to 50 guests across its studios and apartments, with the option of exclusive use of individual floors. This makes it a practical choice for touring parties, supporters clubs, stag and hen groups, and corporate event delegations.
For larger groups, the exclusive use and group stays guide sets out the full options, including flexible contract lengths and a single point of contact for the booking.
Why book direct?
Booking directly through theurbanspace.co.uk means you are dealing with the team who manage the properties, not a third-party platform. Direct bookings benefit from:
- Best available rate, without OTA commission added to the price
- Flexibility on check-in times, room configuration and special requests
- Direct communication with the team before and during your stay
- No booking fees
For event weekends in particular, direct booking makes it easier to coordinate arrival times, request specific apartment configurations for groups, and arrange any extras before you arrive.
As early as possible. Six Nations weekends are the busiest dates on Cardiff’s accommodation calendar, and availability at all Urban Space properties fills up quickly once fixtures are confirmed, often months in advance. If you know your fixture date, book as soon as you can to secure your preferred property and apartment type.
Cardiff city centre car parks operate on match days, though they fill quickly and prices are higher than normal. Street parking in the city centre is very limited on event days. If you are driving to Cardiff for a stadium event, the most practical approach is to park further out and walk or take public transport in. Pontcanna Place and The Lane have street parking on Cathedral Road, which is outside the main congestion zone. Quayside has discounted parking available nearby. For Park Lane, the closest NCP car parks are within a short walk.
Yes. Urban Space operates a 24-hour emergency service, and late arrivals can be accommodated. Contact the team before your stay to arrange access details if you expect to arrive late in the evening.
Yes. The one and two-bedroom apartments at Park Lane, Pontcanna Place and The Lane all have separate living areas and dining spaces, making them well suited to groups getting ready together before an event. The two-bedroom apartments at Pontcanna Place and The Lane sleep four and have full kitchens, ideal for a pre-match or pre-show meal.
Luggage storage is available at Park Lane. If you are checking out on the morning of a match or event and want to explore the city before heading to the venue, the team can hold your bags until you are ready to collect them.
Minimum stays vary by property and date. For peak event weekends, a two-night minimum typically applies. Contact the team or check availability directly to confirm the minimum for your specific dates.
